What Is Neurorehabilitation?

Neurorehabilitation helps improve function and quality of life for people with neurological injuries and diseases. It includes many types of therapy and procedures, including those to relieve pain.

At Memorial Rehabilitation Institute, physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors (physiatrists) lead our neurorehabilitation teams. Several of our physiatrists have additional training in pain management. We work closely with neurologists and neurosurgeons at Memorial Neuroscience Institute and other team members including:

  • Physical, occupational and speech therapists
  • Orthotists who make and fit braces and splints
  • Pharmacists
  • Psychologists, neuropsychologists and social workers

Throughout care, we assess the effectiveness of treatment, adjusting your care plan as needed. This personalized strategy helps you get the most out of neurorehabilitation.

Conditions We Treat

Neurorehabilitation can help improve any neurological condition that affects a person’s ability to function. Common conditions we treat include:

Neurorehabilitation Services

Neurorehabilitation services we offer include:

Neurological Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is one of the most common strategies we recommend for people with neurological conditions. It uses customized exercises and other treatments to improve strength, balance and range of motion.

You perform exercises during in-office sessions with a physical therapist and at home. During sessions, the therapist may also use:

  • Guided movements to improve your flexibility
  • Heat and cold therapy
  • Massage
  • Painless electrical stimulation, such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
Neurological Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy uses exercises, targeted activities and assistive devices to improve your ability to perform everyday activities. Occupational therapists may also help you develop a new daily routine or recommend changes to the layout of your home or workplace to accommodate your physical needs.
Speech Therapy for Neurological Disorders

Speech therapy treats problems with speech, language, feeding and swallowing. Our speech-language pathologists use various exercises and activities to improve:

  • Mouth, lip and jaw movement
  • Reading and vocabulary
  • Sound production
Pain Management

We offer many treatments for chronic pain, including:

  • Acupuncture: Acupuncture involves inserting fine needles at specific points in your body to relieve pain.
  • Braces: Braces provide support, which helps reduce pain.
  • Injections: We offer several types of injections to relieve pain, including nerve blocks and epidural steroid injections.
  • Pain medications: Non-opioid pain medications we prescribe include anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants and nerve pain medications.
  • Radiofrequency ablation: This minimally invasive procedure destroys nerve tissue that causes pain
  • Spinal cord stimulation: This treatment disrupts pain by sending electrical pulses to your spinal cord.

Learn more about these and other non-surgical treatments we offer for back and neck pain.

Baclofen Pump
A baclofen pump is a treatment for spasticity, such as in MS, stroke and brain and spinal cord injuries. We surgically implant a pump under your skin and a thin tube that runs to your spine. The pump delivers baclofen, an antispasticity medication, to the fluid around your spinal cord.
Botulinum Toxin Injections
Botulinum toxin is a chemical produced by bacteria. It has many medical uses, including spasticity management. Our doctors inject botulinum toxin into muscles to relax them. We offer this treatment for conditions such as MS, stroke and brain and spinal cord injuries.
Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)
This treatment delivers painless electrical impulses to muscles to improve muscle tone. The pulses come from a device you wear or electrode patches you stick on your skin. We use FES most often to treat weakness in the legs, feet and hands.
Animal-Assisted Therapy
Animal-assisted rehabilitation has physical and emotional benefits for people with neurological diseases. We often recommend it with other treatments. Aided by our therapists, our trained therapy dogs help patients heal and reach their treatment goals.
Aquatic Therapy
Because you’re lighter in the water, it’s easier to move and perform exercises. Our physical and occupational therapists offer aquatic therapy at Memorial Hospital West.
Music Therapy
Music therapy can help people with neurological conditions improve brain and physical function. Our music therapy program incorporates various musical activities, including listening, singing and playing instruments.
Recreational Therapy
If a neurological condition has left you with a physical disability, recreational therapy can help you be more active. This unique program teaches you how to take part in leisure activities that interest you most.
Determination Drive

Determination Drive is our simulated community environment. Therapists work with you in Determination Drive to perform daily tasks, such as:

  • Getting in and out of a car
  • Finding a book at a library
  • Shopping
  • Using an ATM
  • Walking across different surfaces
Assistive Devices
Our therapists ensure you have the devices you need to be active and independent, such as braces, canes, walkers and wheelchairs.
Support Groups

We offer several support groups for patients and families dealing with the challenges of neurological illnesses. Our current offerings include support groups for:

  • MS
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Stroke
